An Alternative (Humanist) Invocation

A few weeks ago, after it was learned that Barack Obama had chosen mega-church pastor, schlocky self-help guru and homophobic bigot Rick Warren to give the Inaugural Invocation, many of us liberal types were shocked and outraged. Obama had run a campaign based on hope. Hope for change, hope for a better world. Yet he had chosen a man who would deny not only that hope, but the basic civil rights of a large segment of our population.

And while most of us were ranting, and frothing at the mouth, at Obama’s insensitivity, Quaker Dave from The Quaker Agitator had a better idea. Instead of highlighting the hate and bigotry of Rick Warren, he believed we should post our own messages of hope, compassion, tolerance and diversity. And what better day to do it than on Obama’s Inaugural Day. So The Alternative Invocation blog swarm was born…

Submissions were really light for this edition, but Ruchira Paul and all the bloggers over at Accidental Blogger still managed to find eight great blog posts out of those we received for Carnival of the Liberals #82. There’s no confirmed host for the next edition on January 28th. If I don’t get any volunteers for it by Friday or Saturday you can assume I’ll host it at Neural Gourmet. In any case, I’ll keep you updated…

Damn it. There are some people that should live forever. At least the people that inhabit our dreams should. Unfortunately, that’s not so and early this morning one more person responsible for creating that wonderful dream called Star Trek passed away.

Majel Barrett Roddenbery was there from the beginning right through to the most current incarnation of Star Trek. She played the role of the unnamed ship’s first officer Number One in the Star Trek pilot, later playing the role of Nurse Christine Chapel in the original series, followed by voicing several characters in The Animated Series and the irrepressible Betazoid Ambassador Lwaxana Troi in The Next Generation…

Gmail gets themes!

Whoa! I’m a just a simple, geeky middle-aged man with no money. So the things that often excite me these days are simple, geeky things that just happen to be free. Well, just a few minutes ago I happened to hit the trifecta when I logged into Gmail only to discover that GMail now has themes. While the bland old GMail is still the default, even it has had a major face lift to make it (as the GMail blog describes) “crisper and cleaner” and “you might notice a few colors and pixels shifted around here and there.” Quoting:

We wanted to go beyond simple color customization, so out of the 30 odd themes we’re launching today, there’s a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time, weather driven themes that can rain on your mailbox, and fun characters to keep you in good company. There’s even an old school ascii theme (Terminal) which was the result of a bet between two engineers — it’s not exactly practical, but it’s great for testing out your geek cred…

Well, the parties are over and liberal bloggers have turned to some serious self-reflection and lamentation. Greg Laden’s got the best of the bunch this time out over at his eponymous cyber-abode in the 78th edition of this humble blog carnival as it ventures forth into year #5.  Next up is Capitol Annex on December 3rd…

Lip Syncing For Change (video)

Groovy! A political lip sync video stumping for Obama set to Time To Change from The Brady Bunch. Amateur video production doesn’t get much better than this and what a cute idea. A must see. It’s a bit slow until just about 30 seconds in, but give it time.
