Daylight Savings Time is a campaign issue?

I just got this message from the Jill Long Thompson campaign:

Dear Friend,

Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m., Hoosiers across the state will be moving their clocks back one hour, thanks to Mitch Daniels and his one-sided decision making style. His approach to the issue of Daylight Savings Time has left too many Hoosiers in the dark.

As Governor, Jill will work for a statewide referendum on the issue of Daylight Savings Time, so that the voices of all Hoosiers can be heard. She believes that with your input, we can create a policy that better suits the needs of Indiana.

It’s time to change more than our clocks. It’s time to change our Governor.

Sincerely,
Travis Lowe
Campaign Manager
Hoosiers for Jill

For those outside Indiana, Jill Long Thompson is the Democratic candidate for Governor and she’s ran a heck of a campaign. She’s engaged the voters, kept it about the issues, and didn’t equivocate the way so many Democratic candidates seem to do. And ya know, for a while there it really looked like she was going to oust Mitch Daniels..

Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case. The latest Indianapolis Star-WTHR poll shows Daniels ahead, 54% to 36%. With only a 4% margin of error it doesn’t look like Long Thompson can pull out of this tail spin. That’s too bad. I’ll still be voting for her though and who knows? Maybe she’ll pull it off. Maybe voters really have wised up to Mitch’s two-faced act and bait and switch tactics.

But I’m sorry. This has got to be the silliest campaign message I’ve ever seen. Especially since it was directed to supporters. Wouldn’t the prudent thing to do in the last days of the campaign be rallying supporters, and flogging your get-out-the-vote efforts? Maybe some last minute barn stormin’ campaigning in Indy, Bloomington and Fort Wayne? It’s true, Long Thompson has been on a whistle-stop tour of Indiana and will continue right up to the election so I’m being overly harsh there. It’s just that, I mean, look, I already don’t like Mitch Daniels. You don’t need to remind me of that. And Daylight Savings Time just doesn’t fly as a campaign issue. Not when you have hundreds of Hoosiers losing their jobs seemingly weekly.

Oh well. I’ve got to admit, I like the “It’s time to change more than our clocks. It’s time to change our Governor,” line. So pardon the rant, and support Jill Long Thompson on Facebook.
